Voting by Proxy

Electors can appoint a proxy to vote on their behalf should they be unable to make it to a voting place during voting opportunities. A proxy must be an eligible elector and can still cast their own ballot.

A proxy can vote for only one other person unless they are representing members of their own family. A proxy appointed for a person who is not a family member can act as the proxy for this one person only. A person cannot be appointed as a proxy for a non-family member and a family member at the same time.

You can appoint a proxy from Thursday, September 1, 2022, to Monday, October 24, 2022 at 4:30 pm. To appoint a proxy:

  1. You and your proxy must fill out two copies of the Appointment for Voting Proxy - Form 3.
  2. The proxy must take the completed forms to the Elections Office, or any Client Service Centre during regular business hours, and have it certified by City staff.
    • On September 24 and 25, 2022 (advance voting days), Client Service Centres will be open from 12 to 5 pm.
    • On September 26 and 27, October 7 and 14, 2022 (advance voting days), Client Service Centres will be open from 8:30 am to 5 pm.
  3. The proxy brings the original copy of the Appointment for Voting Proxy - Form 3 that was certified and a piece of personal identification to the voting place to cast your ballot on your behalf.

Voting by Mail in Ballot

From Thursday, September 1 to Friday, September 16, 2022, at 4:30 pm, electors can submit an application to the Elections Office to vote by special mail-in ballot online at ottawa.ca/vote, by mail, email, or in person. Special ballot voter kits with instructions on how to cast their ballot will be mailed the week of September 26. Completed special mail-in ballot must be returned to the Elections Office or a Client Service Centre by 4:30 pm on Monday, October 24, 2022, in order to be counted.

Informing your vote:

  • You can view the Rogers TV Capital Ward debate, which aired on cable 22 on September 5that 2:30PM.  The debate will also repeat later in September and throughout October leading up to election day

  • There is a Councillor debate coming up on Thursday, September 22 at 7pm at the Glebe Community Center. You can submit questions in advance to [email protected]. The debate is organized by local community associations in the Glebe, Old Ottawa East and Old Ottawa South.
  • There will be a debate focused on sustainability and municipal climate action options at the SmartNet Sustainability Showcase at Landsdowne 30pm on Saturday September 24 from 11am -12pm. Note that tickets are required, but they are free.
